Frequently Asked Questions
How many mountains are in the UK?
The UK has thousands of mountains depending on how you define them. There are 282 Munros (Scottish peaks over 3,000 feet), 222 Corbetts (Scottish peaks 2,500-3,000 feet), 1,556 Marilyns (peaks with 150m prominence), and numerous other classified peaks across England, Scotland, and Wales. Our database includes all major mountain classifications with detailed information for each peak.
What's the difference between Munros, Corbetts, and Marilyns?
Munros are Scottish mountains over 3,000 feet (914.4m). Corbetts are Scottish mountains between 2,500-3,000 feet (762-914m) with at least 500 feet of prominence. Marilyns are any British peaks with at least 150m of prominence, regardless of absolute height. Each classification offers unique challenges and rewards for hillwalkers and mountain enthusiasts.
Can I filter mountains by difficulty?
Yes! Use our search filters to find mountains by difficulty rating. We classify mountains as Easy, Moderate, Hard, or Expert based on factors like terrain, distance, elevation gain, and technical requirements. This helps you choose mountains appropriate for your experience and fitness level. Remember that weather conditions can significantly affect difficulty.
What information is available for each mountain?
Each mountain page includes comprehensive information: height in meters and feet, OS grid reference, parking details and postcodes, route descriptions, difficulty ratings, estimated walking times, weather considerations, historical facts, nearby facilities, and practical tips. We also include photos, maps, and safety information to help you plan your climb effectively.
Are the mountain heights accurate?
Yes, we use official data from Ordnance Survey and other authoritative sources. Mountain heights can occasionally be revised as surveying techniques improve. We regularly update our database to reflect the most current measurements. Heights are provided in both meters and feet for convenience. If you notice any discrepancies, please contact us.
Can I find mountains near my location?
Absolutely! Use the "Near Me" button in the search bar to find mountains closest to your current location. You'll need to grant location permissions to your browser. The results show distances from your location and are sorted by proximity, making it easy to discover peaks in your area for spontaneous adventures.
Do you have information about Scottish mountains only?
No, our directory covers mountains across the entire United Kingdom including Scotland, England, and Wales. While Scotland has the most high peaks (Munros and Corbetts), we also feature the Lake District fells, Welsh mountains like Snowdon and the Brecon Beacons, and peaks in other regions. Search by region to explore mountains in specific areas.
How often is the mountain information updated?
We continuously update our database to ensure accuracy. This includes adding new route information, updating parking and access details, revising facility information, and incorporating user feedback. Major updates occur quarterly, with critical information like access restrictions updated as needed. Check individual mountain pages for the latest information before your visit.
